Classroom Celebrations

In reading this week we began learning about how our schema (background knowledge) helps us understand more deeply.  When we read we can pause to reflect on how a character is feeling because we have felt that way too.  Our schema for feelings is one way we can better understand how and why a character acts a certain way.  We also know that our schema is always growing as we find out new information and have new experiences.  Sometimes we find that with new learning we have misconceptions and can change our minds.  In writing we began exploring the world of information writing.  We have been learning about prairie dogs and owls in our respective groups in preparation for creating our own information books about these special Colorado animals.  Children are fascinated to learn new facts (grow their schema) and think about how to categorize information in order to best teach someone else.

Field Trip to Saint Mary’s Glacier: We will be heading up to Saint Mary’s Glacier to see for ourselves where our water in Colorado comes from and check out what kinds of plants are living up in the high mountains of Colorado.  Students will need: layers of clothing including a jacket, long pants, sturdy walking shoes, water bottle, sack lunch, sunscreen, and $2.00.  We will leave school at 9:00 and return at 1:30.  Parents are welcome to join us.

Suns Reading Homework

Our third grade students (Suns) will begin reading homework this week.  They will bring a book bag and reading log home on Friday which should be returned the following Thursday (Friday morning at the latest).  Students are required to read a minimum of 100 minutes per week.  This may be divided up any way the student chooses – 20 minutes five nights a week, or 50 minutes twice a week – whatever works best.
