Classroom Celebrations

The Pumpkin Dash was a huge success! With rosy cheeks and proud smiles students tumbled into the classroom carrying their tiny pumpkins. If you have not turned in the money your child raised to support our trip program, it’s not too late. You can turn money in next week as well. Students in the Owls group worked on Halloween information books this week while the students in the Prairie Dogs group worked feverishly to complete their Prairie Dog information books by the Friday deadline. As readers we continued to work on using our schema for feelings to help understand characters and situations in our books. Reading Do Unto Otters (a very fun engaging story about the golden rule) helped us think about what it means to really treat others in the way we ourselves want to be treated. During advising time on Friday we all signed a promise to do our best to be kind, honest, caring, and considerate of one another.

Looking Ahead

  • Wed., Oct. 21 — Early Release – 1:00pm
  • Thurs., Oct. 22 – Fri., Oct. 23 — Conference Days – Students come to school at their scheduled conference time only.
  • Fri., Oct. 30 — All School Skate Day ($8) – Halloween Party

Conference: If you have not signed up for a conference, please do so. The conference folders are out in the foyer (in front of the office). If your child is an “owl” you will sign up for a conference with Ana and if your child is a “prairie dog” you will sign up for a conference with Mary. Your child’s name will appear on the outside of the conference folder in which you need to sign up. Conferences are a wonderful time at the Open School for us to review progress and set goals. Please plan on having your child attend conferences with you. We will spend 30 minutes together during your scheduled time slot. Plan on spending another twenty to thirty minutes before or after your time slot so your child can share his/her work with you.

Bookfair: During conferences the library will feature a bookfair. Our librarians would love help with setting it up and help running it. Please contact Angie or Stacey in the library.

Melody and the Arts: Conferences: The art room will be open to elementary families and siblings during conferences. The hours are 8:00am-4:00pm. (The art room will be closed on Thursday from 1-3 for IA play rehearsal) We will be making Day of the Dead decorations. Please come by and visit.

Original Works: The artwork has been sent to Original Works. Soon you will receive the “Dear Family Letter” that will give you information about how to order your child’s artwork. Orders will be due on November 11th. All ordering is done online. Items that are ordered will arrive at JCOS the first week of December. All proceeds go directly into the elementary art, theater, and music program.

ELC Halloween Party: The ELC Halloween Party is a parent run party for all of the students in the ELC (Mary, Ana, Molly, and Jim’s classes). Please sign up to bring in snacks (healthy food is encouraged), a game, a craft, or the decorating committee. Please decorate for the party while students are skating. We have tubs of decorations you can use to transform the classrooms. You can sign up to help out with the party outside of our classrooms.

Halloween Celebration Schedule:

8:50 – 1:30 – Roller Skating

1:30 – 2:00 – Return to school and have a parade

2:00 – 3:00 – Class party

3:00 – Clean-up and story telling

Halloween Skate Day 2015:

Halloween is quickly creeping up on us and it’s time for all of the JCOS creatures of the night to gather at Skate City for our wicked all school skate day. On Friday, October 30th, dressed in our most outrageous costumes, we will climb abroad the buses and be transported to the Skate City off of 121st for a monstrous time.

The cost is $8.00, which must be turned in to your advisor on or before Friday, Oct. 30th. We’ll be picked up from school at 8:50 and dropped back off at 1:30. Don’t forget to pack all the gooey and slimy things that you want to eat for lunch and bring your roller blades if you want to use them.

Everyone is strongly encouraged to wear your costumes, as long as it won’t get in the way of skating (no masks or costumes that hang down by your feet). Don’t forget to bring your head, $8.00, your slimy lunch and your costume. Parents, grandparents, and siblings are welcome to join us if they dare, but must also pay $8.00. Please call Rosie at #303-982-7056 if you have any questions. Come dressed in your best and be ready to have a bone chilling good time. – Rosie and Sam

Directions: Take Wadsworth South to 6th Ave. Get on 6th Ave. going East. Get off 6th Ave. on to I-25 going North. Take I-25 all the way to 120th, cross the bridge and turn right on Delaware. Turn right on to 121st and follow to Skate City, which will be on the right side of the road.

Haunted House – Do you like to be scared? If so, come on down to the gym and get ready to scream. We will open the doors to the haunted house around 1:45 and will keep them open until 3:30 or until everyone is too scared to go through anymore.
