How often I found where I should be going only by setting out for somewhere else. -Buckminster Fuller
The children all took a mini-fieldtrip out to the school garden to sketch and draw the geodesic dome greenhouse. Students were fascinated to notice how triangles turned into hexagons and all those shapes came together to make the dome. We read a book about many different houses which can be found all over the world and continued to explore our own building designs with toothpicks and clay. Throughout the day we are learning how to engage in conversations with each other about everything from the spiders, crickets and grasshoppers we are observing in our bug habitat to books about friendship. By engaging in a “turn and talk” with a partner students practice the skills of being both a listener and a speaker as they discuss their ideas. We have learned that we might agree or politely disagree with our partner, and when we politely disagree it gives us an opportunity to ask questions and explore different ideas with one another. The Sea Turtles Writing Group published information books about hedgehogs this week after being inspired by our favorite Hans the Hedgehog puppet to learn more. The Dolphins writing group has been working on book recommendations for our favorite stories. Students are learning how to persuade another reader to try a new book they have recommended.
Please continue to bring in newspapers next week so we can construct a model of a geodesic dome here in our classroom!
Upcoming event! On Thursday, September 29th, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, our school will come together to celebrate the richness of our community and garden. Please, join us for this JCOS family potluck “Harvest Feast” with a special (or just plain easy) recipe and an opportunity to break bread together with all ages! Weather permitting we will be outside the front of the school. Please have the recipe written out and displayed next to your dish so that those who must, can avoid food allergies.
