Ana and Mary’s News – January 27th, 2017
The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever. Jacques Yves Cousteau
From the Classroom
From phytoplankton to bioluminescence to hydrothermal vents…our young “oceanographers” are on fire about our ocean discovery. “It is amazing how the whole jellyfish is glowing!” one student concluded with great awe after sharing facts she had found in an ocean information book. Truly, all of us feel that we are on a wondrous journey learning together about this hardly explored world of the “abyssal” and “hadal” ocean zones.
Whether reading information books about the ocean or ocean-related fictional stories, we have consistently been “monitoring for meaning” – noticing when a text begs us to pause, to linger, to notice questions, to make connections, to picture/visualize, or to infer from the context. It is delightful to see our students become such thoughtful readers.
100th Day! – Friday, Feb. 3rd, we will celebrate our 100th day of school. Stars and Moons (1st and 2nd graders) may bring in a collection of 100 items to share at their respective math times. Ideas for collections in the past have been 100 pony beads or Legos or pennies or any other small item. We ask that these collections fit into a gallon-sized bag. Have your child prepared to talk about how s/he kept track of how many items were used – counting or grouping by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s?
Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart – Friday, February 3rd is our Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart event. All the money we collect for this event goes to the American Heart Association and is used to help fund potentially lifesaving research into heart and blood vessel disease and stroke, our nations #1 and #3 killers. If you are going to try to collect donations, please start doing so now. All donations that you collect should be turned in to Rosie or David on or before Friday, February 3rd. Hearts for our memory wall should also be turned in to us, as well.
Everyone is welcome to join us in this fun and very worthy event. Thanks for participating and we’ll see you down in the gym on Friday, February 3rd.

Students’ Math Workbooks
Stars and Moons are taking their first semester math workbooks home. Since we supplement the math curriculum with hands-on activities, math games, and much time for mental math and math discourse, you will find there are still many empty pages in the workbooks. We suggest that you and your child browse through the workbooks (especially through the fabulous glossary!) and pick and choose a few tasks here and there – over time.
