Ana and Mary’s Newsletter Dec. 1, 2017
Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves – Rilke
From the classroom:
We have been working on stepping inside the shoes of characters in our stories and examining questions of the heart. These are the questions that help us better understand the world around us and develop compassion. We read A Day’s Work by Eve Bunting and stepped inside the shoes of Francisco and his Abuelo as they look for a day’s work. Our students brought their schema for Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez to help them navigate a new situation and develop compassion for the characters in this story. During writing time, we have been working on November poems. We took a November walk on Tuesday and soaked in the cool, crisp Autumn air following the rain storm, and we were inspired by the writing of Cynthia Rylant in her beautiful book In November. Students captured the sights, smells and sounds of their fall walk with precise and poetic language. Following are just a few of the images students captured:
Bristly grass, rough rocks, cover the ground like a blanket
Yellowish golden grass as soft as cat’s fur
Leaves that smell like cider
Leaves sway through the fresh air
Birds on wires, skinless trees, dew drops cling to fallen leaves
- Christmas Carol Performance – Dec. 7th,8th,9th
- Monday, Dec. 18 – Field Trip to Museum of Nature and Science. We will view the IMAX film Animals in Flight and spend time touring exhibits in the museum. No charge for students, we will use our Pumpkin Dash funds to cover the cost of the trip. We would love to have parents accompany us, they can pay the museum directly for entrance fees. Students will need a sack lunch.
- Wednesday, Dec. 20 – Hibernation Day and Community Circle. Mary and Ana will host Community Circle. Students can wear pajamas to school that day. We will snuggle up, read books, and spend the day “hibernating.”
- Thursday, Dec. 21 – Sunday, December 7 – NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS – WINTER BREAK students return to school on Monday, Jan. 8.
